Your mentorship officially begins when you choose (keep in mind you have access to the content for 2 years). Calls start quarterly, we encourage you to choose a start time and join your cohort to follow the process together! FOUNDATIONS

We put our hearts and souls into this course for you. Understanding your why and building your mission statement will build a solid foundation for a lasting career. This course will cover topics such as ethics, advocacy, patient rights, nurse’s rights, the essence of nursing, HIPAA and more. We know, the stuff you learn in nursing school, but our hope is that this is a fresh take on each topic, that you can actually apply what you learn in this class and that it helps continue to grow your roots deep. It IS important and we know you’ll especially see why after this class.

We carry so much responsibility most days, and educating our patients can seem like a very daunting and impossible task to fit in at times. In this class, our goal is to give you practical tools to educate your patient and their support team effectively. You may be thinking; I don’t have all the time to do this! Especially when you are new, you can barely keep up with all the tasks and charting… but we find repeatedly that the better, the more clearly you provide education to your patients, the easier your job is in the long run. 

When we discussed building rapport, trust, advocating and giving them the right to self-determination in your Foundations class; patient education is the gateway to achieving all those things for your care. You get there quicker and easier when you provide this education. The goal would be for the patient to completely understand what’s happening with their body/health and that they get to participate in that process! Think of patient education as preventive medicine. Sarah will go over topics like education versus informed consent, how to talk through EFM, how to explain pushing and inductions, and more! You will learn all of Sarah’s tips and by the end of this class, you will have tons of scripts you can incorporate into your practice.

At the end of this course it is expected that the student can:

1. Explain the nurses role in patient education 
2. Develop a plan to implement 2 teaching tools at the bedside
3. Summarize the three components of patient education
4. Formulate a plan to assess, teach and verify

We are POSITIVE that this is the class you’re most excited about for all of mentorship 😆JK! BUT surprise! It might actually be the most important! We encourage you to stick with this one as this will help you not only protect yourself, your license but also your patient’s birth experiences.

In this class, you will learn from different perspectives/experts to explain to us what shared decision-making and informed consent actually are, what it looks like in practice and what we are responsible for. Shared decision-making is the goal, and we believe that our role is right in the middle of that process, facilitating the needs of both the provider and patient. This is no easy task. We believe in you and believe you will do what’s right when it comes to shared decision-making. Baby steps. We are up against culture and system that doesn’t always do this perfectly, and that’s ok! You are accountable to yourself and your patients. Do your best! Utilize your resources, and speak up for what is right. Your influence in this process MATTERS, and you are not alone.

At the end of this course it is expected that the student can:

Objectives: 

1) The student can describe their role and responsibility in the informed consent process. 

2) The student can differentiate between verbal, written and implied consent. 

3) The student can recognize the difference between informed consent and shared decision-making.

We know that this is a module that many of you have been looking forward to – it’s your 101 entry into building your expertise in physiologic birth. In this class, we are going to teach you how to set the body up for labor progress, as well as what actually happens in the body during labor, so that you can recognize when it’s “working” vs. disrupted. 

As nurses we have power and influence over the birth room – we can negotiate more time with the doctor, and make a suggestion that can help move closer to a vaginal birth or get in the way. We are “experts” at birth; let’s then be experts at the anatomy and physiology of birth because when you understand what is and should happen, you can better anticipate, plan for and adjust to help achieve a vaginal birth. Knowing that position changes, in general, are our weapon in fighting the c-section. We have to keep them moving – so let’s understand what we’re doing and why it may help. We hope you are as inspired by this content as we are and that you walk away from this module feeling challenged, encouraged, and excited to go to work and help these birthing families bring life into the world.

At the end of this course it is expected that the student can:

1. Summarize what physiologic birth is and what can disrupt it. 
2. Distinguish different parts and levels of the female pelvis and how the fetus moves through it. 
3. Create a care plan for a fetus that is asynclitic and occiput posterior.

Take a quick minute and think about how confident and/or knowledgeable you feel when managing the scary stuff? After this class you will know the patho of why emergencies happen and what you can do about it. This course will go over 5 main OB emergencies: shoulder dystocia, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, hemorrhage, prolapsed cord and sepsis. You will learn some pathophysiology, signs to look for and what to do as the primary or support RN so that you can function freely in your role as the nurse. 

At the end of this course it is expected that the student can:

1. Demonstrate how to perform Macroberts and suprapubic pressure
2. Interpret vital signs and clinical presentation to determine if a hypertensive patient is decompensating
3. Identify sepsis criteria in a pregnant person 
4. Summarize the 4 stages of blood loss in a postpartum hemorrhage and appropriate nursing interventions for each

Fetal monitoring takes up a big portion of our shifts, our brain space, and our stress! Whether your patient is on continuous fetal monitoring or intermittent, it is time-consuming and a lot to manage. We wanted to create a class that helped it all make sense, clarify your questions and give you a foundation or work from your foundation to continue to feel more and more confident in your FM interpretation and nursing interventions. We want you to walk away from this course feeling confident that you know what you are talking about, what you are charting, and how to keep your patients safe, all the while supporting their preferences and dignity.

We also wanted you to have a solid understanding of the legal implications of FM, how to protect yourself, what common pitfalls go to court and overall release you from some stress related to your fetal monitoring interpretation. You will learn from Pam Hetrick again as she goes over some real case studies that she has encountered as an expert nurse witness.

At the end of this course it is expected that the student can:

1. Student will identify and label fetal heart rate characteristics 
2. Student can create a care plan for fetal resuscitation 
3. Student can describe the pathophysiology of decelerations.

The reality is, that we spend the majority of our time as nurses caring for the birthing person intrapartum and the fetus, not the newborn! The more we thought about it, though, the more we realized that if this process was going to be as thorough as possible, we had to include this topic. Whew! Everyone is scared of that floppy baby. We have, at bear minimum, heard awful stories of babies coming out blue, apneic, needing to run a full code, or having to give blood immediately. It does happen. The good news is, it’s NOT going to happen on every shift. The other good news is that you WILL have to use these skills at some point in your career, which is exactly why we included it! We want you to walk away from this module feeling like you know what is happening to your baby pathophysiology-wise so that you can identify what is normal from what is abnormal, respond appropriately and notify the right people for help. Remembering that you may be the link between this baby getting the help they need, preventing further complications and even death.

1. Student describes the pathology of the extrauterine steps newborns take upon delivery. 
2. Student compares the different respiratory issues a newborn can have after delivery.
3. Student can demonstrate the steps to resuscitation.
